DEFINING MOMENTS IN FOOTBALL THIS WEEK END

DEFINING MOMENTS IN FOOTBALL THIS WEEK END

Saturday 30th April to Monday 2nd May, 2016, would prove to be the defining moments that would go a long way to determine who will go on to claim the championships in the Spanish La Liga and the English Premierships.

What a season this year has proved. Nobody in their wildest dreams ever thought of such an ending. Not Chelsea. Not Manchester United or even City but Leicester City and Tottenham hotspur fighting for the top honours. Unbelievable but very true!

Manchester City with all their millions and the most assembled squad of players in England can only console themselves with a third placed finish. But before they can be sure of that they have an important away match against troublesome Southampton. If Southampton have a good day, I expect them to pull a coup against City whose players will like to protect their limbs because of the all-important Champions league semi-final clash against Real Madrid on Wednesday.

The least said about the match between a hapless arsenal and an almost doomed Norwich City., the better. The match promises nothing and will deliver nothing. What the whole world is waiting for is the impact of the proposed protest by the fans against the coach and the owner.

For the first time there’s palpable discontent and a demand from the Arsenal faithfuls for the axing of the gaffer who they say have shown by have every inclination that he cannot lead the club to win the premiership and there was therefore, the need for a new direction. What can Arsene the ‘cat’ do to stave off the impending calamity?

On Sunday, there will be the battle of London between high flying Tottenham Hotspurs and an insipid Chelsea side. Spurs appear to have blown their best chance of annexing the premiership with last week end’s slip up. Would Chelsea be able to save their face by at winning against their London neighbours. Everything depends on which Chelsea side will turn up for the match.

Manchester United against Leicester on Monday is the pick of the week. While the flag of Leicester has been flying high, the fortunes of United have floundered to the point that the team cannot be recognized. United would do everything to appease their fans but I have a hunch Leicester will prove too strong for them. The title would be won at the Title of Dreams by the wrong team!

With only a single point separating the three top teams in the La Liga, it’s all to play for this week end as any loss of points on the any part of any the three sides could and would prove fatal. A few months ago, Barcelona led by nine points by all that has been whittle away and has led to the most enthralling finish to a La Liga season in a long time.

Real Madrid are expected to go into this week end’s match against Real Sociedad with Ronaldo, Benzema and Bale yet they would prove too much for their opponents. Atletic Madrid against Rayo Vallecano could prove interesting. If Atleti should lose concentration because of the Champions League semi-final clash against Bayern on Tuesday, they would regret it.

Now that there is no distraction of Champions League football, I expect Barcelona to win their remaining three matches and in the process win the league. Having scored 14 goals in their last two matches, I expect Barca to remain focused for the rest of the season and therefore, make mincemeat of Real Betis. The team is too experienced to throw away the title with three matches to the club in the future. Any drop of points could scupper their title challenge and might affect the fortunes of the club in the future.

The biggest match on the globe this week end however, is not taking place in the Europe but rather in the heart of Africa, Ghana to be precise. Yes, on Monday Glorious Accra Hearts of Oak will lock horns with the Porcupine warriors, Kumasi Asante Kotoko at the Accra Sports Stadium.

I expect the stadium to be filled to the rafters with the opposing fans drumming, singing and shouting themselves hoarse before the real action. The year has not gone according to plan for Kotoko while the Phobians seemed to be rejuvenated under their new gaffer the Japanese-American Kenichi. Kotoko would come out fighting hoping to change their flagging fortunes but I expect the Oak Tree to hold firm and triumph by two goals to one. What’s your take?

Stay tuned to this channel the whole week end for updates of the most important matches across the globe. Phooobia! Faaaaabu!
