GHANA IN THE EYE OF THE HOMOPHOBIC STORM

GHANA IN THE EYE OF THE HOMOPHOBIC STORM

Homosexuality! Lesbianism! Gayism! Homophobia! Transgenderism! These are not everyday words used in our part of the world. At worst, in the past, we used to hear of such words in whispers!

However, nowadays, social media is awash with one thing or the other to do with sexual orientation. Even mainstream radio and television has been brought on board because the issues can no longer be kept in closets.

How can we hope to keep such issues in closets? How can we hope to sweep issues that the Prime Minister of Great Britain and the President of the United States of America, deem important?

We can’t hide any longer. The issues have to be faced the headlong. Come on somebody, what message is being sent across if former President Obama could undertake a state tour of some African countries and legalization of homosexuality, gayism was high on the agenda?

It’s interesting to hear men of God and moralists get on their high horses shouting themselves hoarse that the issues are immoral and abhored by the Bible and Quran.

Africa! We are always the last to wise up on international issues. The world is now a global village and one cannot wish not to be affected by things in other places.

We cannot hope to accept everything from the west including their aid and loans and frown on their sexual orientation.  We will only be deluding ourselves.

By the way, did you listen to Nana Addo the other day when he was intervened on Al Jazeera? I bet you couldn’t help but smile when he went rationalizing when the question of legalizing homosexuality was put to him.

You haven’t forgotten so soon that not long ago the same question was put to former President Mahama. While his mouth said one thing,  his actions said another thing altogether with his then minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Nana Oye Lithor stopping just short of claiming that Ghana does not frown on homosexuality.

Indeed, if you are very observant, you would have noticed that it’s the opposition politicians who make the most noise when issues of homosexuality come up.

Earlier, I said Africans are the last to come to terms with global issues. I’m also asserting that while government officials are circumspect with their choice of words on issues of homosexuality, the opposition is very vocal. The reason I guess should be very obvious to you.

My dears, issues of homosexuality, gayism, lesbianism etc, have long ceased to be moral or religious issues. They are now very POLITICAL!

To deal with political matters, we have to be smart. Those castigating the president, should pipe down and listen intently to the interview. The president urged civil society and other bodies to increase their activism for the issues. He knows what he is talking about. The president is aware that the gay lobby in the USA and Britain for instance, are very powerful and wield clout in politics, business and culture. They are therefore, no pushovers!

American songstress, Miley Cyrus

If our heroes and heroines like former tennis ace, Martina Navratilova, Justin Fashanu, Elton John, Miley Cyrus, Freddie Mercury, Angelina Jolie, and Adam Lambert to name just a few are gay, do we know what we are up against?

What music do your children listen to?  What sport do they follow? Who are their favourite actors and actresses? Do we know the sexual orientation of their heroes! Unbeknown to us, most are gay and our children look up to them!

In a sense Nana Addo was urging Ghanaians who are sympathetic or into it, to engage in activism.

Jodha of Jodha Akbar fame

To those who are saying stoically that homosexuality would never be legalized in Ghana, they should listen and look hard.  Presently there’s a very popular series running on Joy Prime. Yea, I’m talking about Jodha Akbar.

It features transgenders and we all watch and have no complaints. That my dears, is how it starts and before long, it finds acceptability.

In a sense Nana Addo was urging Ghanaians who are sympathetic or into it, to engage in serious activism to affect legislation in the future!

Former Us president Obama

Why would a whole President of the USA, board AIRFORCE ONE to come to Ghana and preach legalizing homosexuality to us?

Have you thought about why in 2011, then British Prime Minister, David Cameron tied the continued grant of aid and loans to Ghana to the legalization of homosexuality?

The two men know all about the moral issues that would be brought up and are very much aware that at a certain point in time, political considerations would force us to accept homosexuality!

If Ghana is really averse to the practice of homosexuality, then, she has to display real political and economic independence in her dealings with the developed world. If we continue to be dependent on handouts from the west, then, the truth would start staring at us in the face in the very near future!

Hope we haven’t forgotten that it was our British colonial masters that brought formal education to Ghana. One rhyme every Ghanaian child who had been through formal education learns is that “he who pays the piper, calls the tune”.
