Christmas is here again! Christmas 2017 is upon us! All glory be to God!

Christmas evokes pleasant and nostalgic memories. This is because as children growing up, you can be sure that it at Christmas that we had the most fun. Which child wouldn’t want Christmas on the horizon knowing that it would bring new things like dresses and shoes and of course the right to go out and have fun?

What would Christmas be without church service at Methodist, Presby or Roman Catholic churches to show off one’s new dress? I mean complete with X’mas caps or hats, toy pistols and goggles to match. As children we used to walk with pride and why not, it would be another year before a new dress would be bought for us.

Fountain at the old Kwame Nkrumah Circle

The Kwame Nkrumah Circle was one location that was highly patronised by children especially on Christmas Eve and on Christmas day when the fountain decorated with Christmas lights, was opened to the public. It was a never miss!

On Christmas day, whatever meal was prepared had to go with chicken. Whether it was fufu, plain rice or hollow, had to be accompanied by the children’s favourite, chicken. Nothing beat the feeling back then of save one’s chicken and having washed your hands, you eat it to one’s heart’s desire.

I forgot to mention that soft drinks like Fanta, Mirinda, Coca Cola and the others, were only available during special occasions. As a result as children, we made sure that at Christmas, we had our fill.

Nothing beat Christmas back in the day as every boy or girl would have some money so that we could all go to Kingsway Stores and ride on the one and only escalator in town.

On this day, if one was lucky, ‘Father Christmas’ would be on hand to give all the children presents like toy guns, pistols, dolls, sweets etc.

What won’t I give to have those years again? I mean the boys in the area putting up their own Christmas house made of palm and coconut fronds where we played games, music and all the ‘silly’or boyish pranks!

There’s a saying that nothing brings a family together than a movie at Christmas. Yes, in the past, Christmas would not be complete without whole families coming out to enjoy themselves. “Ten Commandments” is an all-time classic and families never got tired of watching it once or twice every year especially on 24th or 31st Night. Popular cinema houses like Orion, Rex, Globe and Regal, were filled to capacity in those nights.

Come on people, it’s Christmas.  Glory be to God!

ON THE DAY OF CHRISTMAS, FIRE FALL ON ALL PATRONS OF TOMMYPARLOM. COM.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!
